West Virginia tends to skew Republican, but it may be considered a minor battleground state in the 2020 Presidential election, particularly given Donald Trump’s impeachment odds. In 2016, however, Trump did extremely well in the state, winning in a landslide against Hillary Clinton. Trump won every WV county and took 68.5% of the vote compared to Clinton’s 26.43%.
On the Democratic side, WV voters tend to favor anti-establishment or “outsider” candidates. In 2016, Bernie Sanders won every WV county, defeating Hillary Clinton 51.41% to 35.84%. Paul T. Farrell, a WV attorney, took 8.94% of the DNC primary vote in WV, underscoring the state’s general mistrust of entrenched mainstream politicians.
Of course, by the time the state’s delayed primaries rolled around, Joe Biden was the only candidate still running in the 2020 Democrat primary, so he won the state easily.
WV has voted Republican in four of the last seven Presidential elections, and with no real challengers to speak of, Trump’s odds to win the GOP nomination are through the roof. Trump won the WV Republican primary with 94.5% of the vote and took all 35 delegates in the state.
West Virginia voters tend to stay primarily to the center politically and typically hold moderate to slightly right positions on most issues. This makes West Virginia an ideal territory for incumbent Donald Trump in 2020. You can bet on the WV 2020 general elections at any reputable offshore political betting site.
