Given Washington’s liberal bent, the 2016 Presidential election wasn’t particularly close. Hillary Clinton won the race with 54.30% of the vote, while Donald Trump took in 38.07%. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson took 5.01% of the vote and was not a factor in altering the main party outcome. Trump will likely campaign in Washington, but it’s largely considered a foregone conclusion for another blue victory in 2020.
The Washington Democratic primary was interesting, as the state has a tendency to go with anti-establishment candidates. In 2016, Bernie Sanders won every county in WA, beating Hillary Clinton with 72.72% of the vote compared to her 27.10%.
This cycle, Bernie Sanders odds looked decent early, but by March 10, he was polling well behind Joe Biden nationally. Still, while Sanders was expected to win the state a few weeks out from the primary, by election eve, Biden was favored on the DNC betting odds boards. While the vote is still coming in, it looks as though Uncle Joe has won the state.
The 2020 WA Presidential primary was held on Tuesday, March 10. However, Donald Trump, the incumbent, did not have any real challengers trending near him per the GOP betting odds, and national polls bear out the same result.
As such, Trump coasted to the Republican nomination in WA, though the state is likely out of his grasp in the general election. He won the GOP WA primary and took all 43 delegates.
