On Tuesday, June 2, 2020, South Dakota will be hosting its Presidential primary election to determine the candidates that will represent the Democratic and Republican parties in the upcoming 2020 general election. While Donald Trump is obviously the favorite on the GOP side, the Democratic party still hasn’t settled on a candidate, and there are several hopefuls vying for the DNC nomination.
The SD general election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, and the event will determine not only the next President of the United States, but also the state’s US House seat, one of its two US Senate seats, and a huge number of local and state government seats, too. You will be able to wager on the 2020 primaries and general election at top election odds sites, and you can track the trends leading up to these elections here.

In June 2016, Donald Trump took the South Dakota Republican primary by default, as Ted Cruz and John Kasich had already withdrawn. The current 2020 GOP odds show that Trump is again the only credible candidate for now, despite his impeachment odds painting a picture of potential trouble ahead.
Of course, impeachment is a far cry from removal from office, and the process could actually strengthen Trump’s run in the lead-up to November 2020.
It is likely that by the time June 2 rolls around, the Democratic nominee will already be determined. This is typically the case in SD, and this year should be no different. As of right now, the DNC candidacy odds favor front-runner Elizabeth Warren, but there are several other contenders in the mix. If you want to wager on a potential winner, you should do so long before the SD primary gets underway in order to get the best possible odds.
Since the primaries in South Dakota take place so late in the process, they traditionally carry little weight, making them overlooked events in the overall cycle. It is unlikely that you will find any betting lines for who will win the 2020 South Dakota primaries specifically, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wager on presidential election odds and risk a few bucks on the candidates you think will triumph in the upcoming election cycle.

In 2016, the South Dakota Presidential election went to Donald Trump by a wide margin (over 29 points). Trump amassed some 61.53% of the vote, while Hillary Clinton got only 31.74%. Interestingly, the Republican margin could have been even bigger, as Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson won 5.63% of voters, which most analysts agree probably cannibalized the red side more than the blue side.
